Town Legal LLP

Planning Law and Careers Workshops

(November/December 2021)

We are delighted that Town Legal LLP has partnered with BVL for an event, designed to give our students a chance to learn about the fascinating field of planning law.

Planning law is about how the land and sea around us is used and developed.  It is the legal framework within which decisions are taken about how we arrange different uses and buildings to try to balance economic growth with our social needs and environmental protection.  It affects everything from public transport, homes, parks, shopping centres in cities and towns to the countryside and the seabed around our national shores.

The event will take place on Monday, 29 November 2021 and Wednesday, 1 December 2021, between 6:00-7:00pm via Zoom. Participants at the event will enjoy the following:

  • Monday 29 November, “Introduction to Planning Law” workshop: The Introduction to Planning Law workshop will introduce you to what the country’s planning system is and how it shapes our daily lives. We’ll identify the key decision-makers at national and local levels, the process which developers must follow to try to obtain planning permission to use and develop land, and the opportunities that the public have to engage in the planning system. The Introduction to Planning Law will be interactive, with chances for discussion and asking questions you might have.

  • Wednesday 1 December, “Careers in the Legal World” workshop: The Introduction to Careers in the Legal World workshop will tell you about the different kinds of jobs you can do in law or related areas of work. While this includes the two main types of legal jobs as a qualified lawyer in our legal system – being a solicitor or a barrister – there are many other types of jobs in our legal world. These include a variety of office jobs in solicitors’ firms or barristers’ chambers, for example in finance or secretarial work. There are also many more types of jobs related to law, whether for public organisations such as the law courts, local councils or charities, or for an assortment of businesses such as consultancy firms specialising in environmental assessments for proposed developments, surveyors, designers or engineers who help form and design developments, or legal publishers who provide legal websites and other essential legal resources. We’ll show how you, whether moving on from school or university, can try to experience, qualify or apply for these kinds of jobs, including as an apprentice. The Introduction to Careers in the Legal World will also be interactive, with chances for discussion and questions.
